Prenda World Login

At Prenda our primary users were Students, Guides (Teachers), and Parents. To prepare for the new school year one of the initiatives our product team worked on was to offer all students Google accounts (prendakids.com). This was to reduce having to remember students login credentials, to ensure heightened security, and to allow for an easier login experience into our platform. The login page didn’t have an assigned Product Team so our group took the initiative to create a workable experience and deploy prior to the school year starting.

I had a week from awareness to find a solution to developers for our start of the school year. My process includes more time to inform users and collect necessary research and feedback from our users.

Immediate goals of this project:

  • Create a Google login for our students to quickly access our platform.

  • Offer an easy login experience for our external education tools offered to our students (Clever, Kahn Academy, Lexia, Zearn, etc.).

  • Keep necessary login information for guides and parents to access their accounts.

    • This included a ‘Magic Link’ which emailed parents a link to access their dashboard.

Long term goals for this project:

  • Make Google logins an option for our teachers and parents (this was not a mandatory solution as our teachers are hired as contractors and might prefer another email platform, parents might as well).

  • Offer a delightful, on brand experience that allows parents who are also teachers to get to their desired view focusing on being student focused.

Who the project impacted:

  • All users. Main focus for our group was on the student experience.

  • Designers from Student, Parent, Guide groups, and our Support team.

Project Contributors:

  • Me, lead UX Designer.

  • Student team Product Manager and Engineers.

  • UX Designers to align on an experience that would impact all users.

Login Experience

To the point, included a space to login with email and password for guides and students and a separate experience if you were a parent (including a magic link which authenticates without the need of a password).

Researching Potential Login Experiences

With limited time I went online and looked up login experiences for multiple users. Here are some of the ideas I came across I wanted to further explore:

Mockup Concepts

Given time constraints and a design system which didn’t have specific illustrations for each user here were some of the ideas I mocked up which were shared with my Product Team and other UX Designers:

UX Huddle

It was pivotal to collaborate with the rest of our UX group to ensure this would be as delightful of an experience given time frame and our teams need to include the Google login for our students.

Current Login Experience

After UX and Engineering approval this was the design I approved to be released.

Issues with this Login:

Given that this was a fast, non-user verified release with limited Developer resources we hypothesized there might be some difficulty. We prepared our support staff about the addition of the Google login button.

Being in contact with Support, they let us know of at least 10 users who had issues including:

  • Students using the email field and not clicking ‘Login with Google’.

    • They were still able to login this way if they were returning students.

  • Parents who were Guides (which were 20% of our adult users) weren’t directed to the experience they anticipated.

    • They were directed to Guide dashboard which might not have been their intentions.

  • Without awareness of the changes some Guides tried using Student’s logins from the prior school year.

Solution to Guide and Parent Experience

After a few rounds with the UX group and developers we landed on this as a solution to ensure users got to where they needed to.

Opportunities, Learning, and Considerations

Our group was aware of our time constraint and that this wasn’t the ideal solution for our users. We worked collaboratively and lean but missed out on research and a proper onboarding experience for this change. Users were able to find workarounds to get into their desired experience and utilize our products but this should not be our final outcome. Here are some questions I would want to find solutions for through research and a more intentional design sprint:

  • How would a first time user react to this screen?

  • What was Prenda’s branding besides our blues and peach?

More Delightful Future Release Concept

After speaking with our product team and sharing with the company this solution is one I would want to test and receive further information from Prenda users and non-users.

Some considerations to point out for this concept:

  • Added an additional layers for user awareness - filled in button in blue along, checkmark, and welcoming each group ‘Hello Student’ (etc.).

  • Would want to fairly represent communities of Prenda users. This was a quick visual representation of what illustrations might look like based off of icons I sourced online.

  • Would want to ensure gender, race, sexual orientation, family makeup, and title (Parent could change to something along the lines of caretaker, guardian, etc.) were inclusive.

  • Would want iconography to match the overall branding of Prenda (still in discussion with our Marketing and Design groups).
